2 Helping Adults with Diabetes: A Review of Evidence-Based Interventions (Prevalence Studies ) - Health and Social Work
Auteur : Health and Social Work
Genre : Forme et santé
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions and poses serious threats to individuals and grave challenges for society. In the United States alone, 16 million people have diabetes, and data from the World Health Organization indicates that its prevalence will continue to increase rapidly (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1998; King, Aubert, & Herman, 1998). Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for approximately 90 percent of all cases (Beebe & O'Donnell, 2001). Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insufficient production of insulin or cellular resistance to insulin resulting in higher than normal blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). Diabetes most often occurs after age 40 and, therefore, is frequently considered a disease of middle and older age. Type 2 diabetes is found in every ethnic and racial group. Its prevalence, however, is higher

INTRODUCTION Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), a subgroup of strains of E. coli, colonizes the small intestine and causes watery diarrhoea by the elaboration of a heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) and/or a heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) (1). Infection due to ETEC may result in severe cholera-like disease, moderate diarrhoea, or no symptoms at all. In fact, carriage of ETEC by healthy individuals is very common, making it difficult to estimate the influence this pathogen exerts on global health (2-4).

8 Prevalence and Public-Health Significance of HIV Infection and Anaemia Among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinics in South-Eastern Nigeria (Report) - Journal of Health Population and Nutrition
Auteur : Journal of Health Population and Nutrition
Genre : Forme et santé
ABSTRACT HIV infection and anaemia are major public-health problems in Africa and are important factors associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of HIV infection and anaemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in south-eastern Nigeria. To achieve this, a cross-sectional survey was conducted during July 2005 June 2006 using standard techniques. Of 815 pregnant women studied, 31 (3.8%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.5-5.1) were HIV positive. Maternal age and gestational age were not associated with HIV infection (p0.05). The prevalence of anaemia (Hb 11.0 g/dL) was 76.9%, and 15 (1.8%, 95% CI 0.9-2.7) had severe anaemia (Hb 7.0 g/dL). A significantly higher prevalence of anaemia was observed among individuals in their second pregnancy trimester (p0.05) and those infected with HIV (p0.05). Since

9 Coerced Group Collaborative Evolution As an Explanation for Sexual Reproduction's Prevalence (Report) - Natural Science
Auteur : Natural Science
Genre : Ingénierie
1. INTRODUCTION Why sexual reproduction? This question is of interest not only to biologists, but also to the general public as a whole [1-4]. The prevalence of sexual reproduction suggests that there are major benefits provided by this mode of reproduction. The benefits, however, are not obvious. In many ways, asexual reproduction seems to be a better evolutionary strategy: only one parent is required, and all of the parent's genes are passed on to its progeny [5-12]. In a sexual population, the males are unable to produce offspring of their own and females only transfer half their genes to offspring, hence the theoretical problem of the 'two-fold cost of males.' Sexual reproduction must also go through obstacles that do not hinder asexual reproduction. Sexually reproducing organisms must spend a great deal of time and energy to find and attract mates. The peacock is a good example. The

11 Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Among Grade 1 Schoolchildren in Northern Cape Province: Prevalence and Risk Factors (Original Articles) (Report) - South African Medical Journal
Auteur : South African Medical Journal
Genre : Forme et santé
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was described as an entity in 1973. (1) It is the severe end of a spectrum of deleterious effects caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol, including some or all of the following features: facial dysmorphism, prenatal and/or postnatal growth retardation, and neurological, cognitive and behavioural abnormalities. The term 'fetal alcohol spectrum disorder' describes the effects that can occur in an individual who is prenatally exposed to alcohol, encompassing FAS, partial FAS (PFAS) and other adverse outcomes. (2) Our study focuses on FAS and PFAS because dysmorphic features make them more specific and recognisable diagnoses. FAS/PFAS is among the most common causes of learning disability worldwide, but especially high rates have been described in parts of South Africa. Whereas the average prevalence of FAS in high-income countries has been estimated at 0.97/1 00

12 Labor Flexibility and the Prevalence of High-Growth Entrepreneurial Activity. - Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship
Auteur : Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship
Genre : Entreprise et management
While entrepreneurship has been argued to contribute to country well-being through enhancing innovation (Audretsch, 2002; Michelacci, 2003), productivity, and economic efficiency (Baumol, 1990; 2002), one of the its most important contributions is to job creation (Birch, 1979; Davidsson and Delmar, 2003; Folster, 2000). The job creation potential of entrepreneurial ventures is an important issue that has captured the attention of both researchers and policy makers. Countries differ not only in the extent of overall levels of entrepreneurial activity, but also in the growth potential of the ventures created (Autio, 2007). Earlier studies suggest that the job creation potential of entrepreneurial firms is quite concentrated, where a relatively small proportion of entrepreneurial ventures generate the vast majority of new jobs (Storey, 1994; Autio, 2005). Overall levels of entrepreneuria

Introduction Extended-spectrum [beta]-lactamases (ESBLs) are a heterogeneous group of plasmid mediated bacterial enzymes that can hydrolyze oxymino-[beta]-lactams and are responsible for bacterial resistance against extended-spectrum [beta]-lactam antibiotics. Production of ESBL was first described in K. pneumoniae isolates in 1983. Especially with the excessive worldwide use of cephalosporins, the incidence of multidrug-resistant ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae is markedly elevated (1,2). These organisms are major nosocomial pathogens, which cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia or intra-abdominal infections. Because of the cross-resistance that they show to other groups of antibiotics, few antimicrobial agents are available as therapeutic options for these infections (3). At the same time, they are important community-acquired urinary pathogens, and their spread in the community

14 Correlation of Asthma Symptoms with Prevalence of Indoor N[O.Sub.2] Concentration in Kuwait (Report) - Journal of Environmental Protection
Auteur : Journal of Environmental Protection
Genre : Science et nature
1. Introduction Collecting real environment data about Kuwait is considered one of the most important tasks in developing a suitable environment. This is especially true when such data can be used in solving actual problems related to population health. Asthma is considered one of the common Sick Building Syndrome symptoms. Kuwait is considered one of the countries with harshest weather conditions. It is estimated that Kuwaitis spend most of their times indoors. Indoor environment quality should be taken seriously since indoor allergens and irritants can play a significant role in determining the health of households. It is important to recognize potential asthma triggers in the indoor environment and reduce exposure to those triggers. Some of most common indoor asthma triggers include secondhand smoke, dust mites, mold, cockroaches and other pests, household pets and combustion byproduc

15 Prevalence of Smokeless Tobacco Use Among Canadian Youth Between 2004 and 2008: Findings from the Youth Smoking Survey (Quantitative RESEARCH) - Canadian Journal of Public Health
Auteur : Canadian Journal of Public Health
Genre : Droit
Smokeless tobacco (SLT) is a term used to describe a family of non-combusted consumer products that deliver nicotine and are generally placed in the mouth or nasal passage. SLT products are addictive and contain over 3,000 chemicals, of which at least 28 are known carcinogens. (1,2) It is estimated that less than 1% of Canadians (aged 15+ years) are regular users of SLT; however, SLT use is higher among adolescents and young adults compared to the general population. (3) Developing a better understanding of SLT use among at-risk Canadian youth should be a public health priority. In 2009, value sales of SLT in Canada increased by 1% over the previous year, reaching a value of approximately $189 million, although net volume of sales decreased. (4) The majority of SLT sold in Canada is moist snuff and US-style chewing tobacco, although rates of Swedish-style snuff use, also known as snus, h

Auteur : International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health
Genre : Famille et relations
In Asia, rapid change in adolescent romantic and sexual behaviors has accompanied the transition from a traditional Confucian to a more modern society, according to a study of young people in metropolitan areas in Vietnam (Hanoi), China (Shanghai) and Taiwan (Taipei). (1) As a result, levels of these behaviors were more common among a recent cohort of adolescents than they were among their counterparts from just a few years earlier. For example, the researchers found that 15-19-year-olds in their sample often were more likely to have dated or to have engaged in fondling or intercourse by age 18 than were 20-24-year-old respondents, who had matured at a slightly earlier stage of societal modernization. A similar relationship between adolescent behavior and modernization: Sexual behaviors were most prevalent in relatively modern Taipei, and least prevalent in less developed Hanoi. The r

INTRODUCTION Anaemia remains a major public-health problem, affecting about a quarter of the world's population. Its adverse health consequences affect people with varied degrees of affluence and from all age-groups, particularly women of childbearing age and children (1). About two billion people are iron-deficient, with half of them manifesting clinical signs of anaemia (1,2). The micronutrient status of high-risk populations has recently received extensive attention as it adversely affects pregnancy outcome, working ability, intellectual capacity, and immunity, including enormous economic drainage (3-4).

ABSTRACT Twenty-four soil samples, (3 samples per park), were collected from eight public parks in Birmingham, Alabama. Soil samples were randomly collected from around monkey bars, slides and swings where human contact with Toxocara ova is likely to occur. Three hundred grams each were collected from the surface to a depth of 10cm. (Duwel, D.,1984, Mahdi and Ali, 1992). Soil samples of 50 grams were washed with tap water through a set of three sieves of mesh width of 250um, 120um and 30um respectively. Soil samples collected from the third sieve were transferred to 15ml centrifuge tubes and were tested for Toxocara using standard saturated magnesium sulfate flotation techniques (Quinn et.al., 1980). Ova belonging to Toxocara spp., were recovered from three parks (38%) and were found around swings (29) and slides (21). Ova recovered were intact and some were embroynated. Other nematode o

27 Prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among pregnant women in a rural district in Egypt - Hossam Hassan Khamis
Auteur : Hossam Hassan Khamis
Genre : Médecine
Master''s Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, , language: English, abstract: Background: Egypt has the highest prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the world. Screening of HCV during pregnancy is not routinely done in Egypt as many other countries, although pregnancy is an important period where screening of HCV infection is important owing to low immunity, the possibility of vertical transmission and later on horizontal transmission to the baby or other household contacts. Aim: to determine the seroprevalence of HCV antibodies (HCV-Ab) and risk factors associated with infection among pregnant women in Egypt. Patients and Method: 360 pregnant women visiting the health care units for routine antenatal care were tested using 3rd generation ELISA test for detection of HCV-Ab. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done for seropositive cases. Result

Genre : Forme et santé
Nursing leadership is important to the recognition and prevention of horizontal violence (HV). Unfortunately, there is little evidence or proven strategies to guide nurse leaders in dealing with HV in the professional practice environment. Evidence-based leadership (EBL) is a construct that incorporates "a transformational relationship involving organizational stewardship, decision-making, and vision translation through reasoned application of empirical evidence from management, leadership, and patient care research." (DeGroot, 2005, p. 40). Examples of EBL in the research literature focus on such phenomena as shared governance (Porter-O'Grady, l992), relationship-based care as a care-delivery system (Kolorutis, 2007), the Magnet hospital literature (Scott, Sochalski, & Aiken, 1999), and the sentinel research by Aiken (2002) that correlates education and numbers of registered nurses

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a non-diagnostic umbrella term that covers several medical diagnoses associated with prenatal alcohol exposure, which include: fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS), alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND), and alcohol-related birth defects (ARBD). As has been discussed previously in the literature, FASD is associated with organic brain damage that has a detrimental impact on abstracting abilities, memory skills, information processing, the comprehension of social rules and expectations, the ability to connect cause and effect relationships, and the ability to learn from past experiences. (1-4) People with FASD often display characteristics such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness and poor judgement. Given these factors, if appropriate diagnosis, interventions and support services are not put in

INTRODUCTION Cardiac arrhythmias in the immediate postoperative period are frequent after open-heart surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD). They occur in the vulnerable period of haemodynamic recovery of the newly operated heart. Whereas there is extensive literature on arrhythmias during late follow-up after paediatric cardiac surgery (1-4), few data exist on the occurrence rate and clinical consequences of arrhythmias in the early postoperative period after open-heart surgery in the current era in the paediatric age group. Available information focused on specific cardiac lesions (5-7), specific types of arrhythmias (8-10), or the use of specific antiarrhythmic drugs (11-12) in the early postoperative setting. Other recent data dealt with arrhythmias in a mixed (not only postoperative) paediatric intensive care unit population (13).

INTRODUCTION Resistant bacteria are emerging worldwide as a threat to favorable outcome in the treatment of common infections in community and hospital settings (1). Among the wide array of antibiotics, [beta]-lactams are the most widely used agents. The most common cause of resistance to [beta]-lactam antibiotics is the production of [beta]-lactamases. Emergence of resistance to [beta]-lactam antibiotics began even before the first [beta]-lactam, penicillin, was developed. The first plasmid-mediated [beta]-lactamase TEM-1 was originally isolated from blood culture of a patient named Temoniera in Greece, in the early 1960s (2). TEM-1 being plasmid and transposon mediated has facilitated its spread to other species of bacteria. Another common plasmid-mediated [beta]-lactamase SHV-1 (sulfhydryl variable), is chromosomally encoded in the majority of isolates of K. pneumoniae but is usually

HIV AND HPV CO-INFECTION HIV is believed to increase the risk of HPV infection and cervical neoplasia, in part due to HIV-induced immunodeficiency and the resulting inability to control HPV infection. (1,2) HIV status, herpes zoster, oral candidiasis and tuberculosis have all been found to be associated with carcinogenic human papillomavirus (HPV), consistent with other studies that found HIV and HIV-associated immunosuppression to be independently associated with HPV positivity. Genre : Forme et santé
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in South Africa, with a crude incidence rate of 18.5/100 000 recorded between 1993 and 1995. (1) A small but significant percentage (5-10%) of breast cancer cases are directly due to an inherited susceptibility. (2) Two tumour suppressor genes involved in early-onset breast and ovarian cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2, have been mapped and cloned. (3,4) These two genes explain 20-40% of heritable breast cancer cases in various populations over the world. (5,6) A large linkage and mutation study on 237 families collected by the Breast Cancer Linkage Consortium found that overall BRCA1 accounts for 52% of all families, and BRCA2 for 32%, leaving 16% of the families with a familial breast cancer phenotype unaccounted for. (7) In the study, 81% of the families with both a breast and an ovarian phenotype were BRCA1-positive families while 14% lin

39 Prevalence and Patterns of Multimorbidity Among Elderly People in Rural Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study (Report) - Journal of Health Population and Nutrition
Auteur : Journal of Health Population and Nutrition
Genre : Forme et santé
INTRODUCTION It is projected that, by 2020, there will be one billion elderly persons ([greater than or equal to]65 years) in the world, 71% of whom will live in low-income countries (1). The number of elderly persons in Bangladesh was projected to double from 7.8 million in 2001 to 16.2 million by 2025 (2). The country is currently undergoing both epidemiologic and demographic transitions, where the decline in both fertility and mortality rates in early life have resulted in increased life expectancy. According to the estimation of the United Nations, life expectancy at birth is expected to increase to 74 years in 2025 (3). Based on data from Bangladesh, life expectancy at birth is expected to be 76.9 years for men and 85.1 years for women in 2015, calculated based on the scientific report of icddr,b (4). At present, based on icddr,b data, life expectancy at 60 years is additional 17.6

In an outbreak, rapid detection of the AIV is considered to be a valuable tool for its handling on poultry farms. In the present study, 975 samples of tissue homogenate, tracheal, and cloacal swabs (325 of each) were collected from 40 suspected flocks (10 layer breeder and 30 commercial layers) and were processed for AIV detection using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and virus culture and identification techniques. The AIV was detected from 92 (9.4%) samples (12 samples of tissue homogenate, 50 tracheal and 30 cloacal swabs) of 4 (10%) layer flocks (one layer breeder and 3

Genre : Forme et santé
Abstract We noticed a seemingly high prevalence of penicillin allergy in patients who had been diagnosed with peritonsillar abscess (PTA) at our institution. To formally investigate this observation, we reviewed the emergency room (ER) records of 118 patients who had presented between Jan. 1, 1995, and Dec. 31, 1999, with suspected PTA. A diagnosis of PTA was confirmed by the presence of pus on incision and drainage in 78 of these patients (66.1%). The remaining 40 patients (33.9%) were diagnosed with peritonsillar cellulitis (PTC). Of the 78patients with confirmed PTA, 13 (16.7%) self-reported an allergy to an antibiotic, including 11 (14.1%) who claimed to be allergic to penicillin. In the 40 patients with PTC, the corresponding figures were only 3 (7.5%) and 1 (2.5%). The difference between the PTA and PTC groups with respect to the prevalence of self-reported penicillin allergy wa

Abstract Aim: This was to establish the prevalence of MIH among 12-year-old children in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to investigate its aetiological background and clinical consequences of MIH in a population with medium caries activity. Methods: MIH prevalence was determined as a part of the first national oral health survey in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004, conducted on a gender-balanced sample of 560 12-year-old children, in line with recommended criteria for MIH diagnosis and registration. The MIH sub-sample had been selected from the main sample and it included children with MIH and their control pairs. The two groups were matched in terms of gender, age, residence and birth. The examinees completed questionnaires to determine variables related to development of enamel defects in first permanent molars and permanent incisors. Clinical consequences were analyzed by comparing DMFT

49 The Prevalence of Hepatitis B Co-Infection in a South African Urban Government HIV Clinic (Original Articles) (Clinical Report) - South African Medical Journal
Auteur : South African Medical Journal
Genre : Forme et santé
Objective. There are an estimated 350 million hepatitis B carriers worldwide. In South Africa the prevalence of mono-infection with hepatitis B has been estimated to range from 1% in urban areas to approximately 10% in rural areas. The exact prevalence of hepatitis B in the HIV-infected population has not been well established. Hepatitis B screening is not standard practice in government HIV clinics. Co-infection with hepatitis B and HIV can influence antiretroviral treatment and prognosis of both diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hepatitis B/HIV coinfection. Design. This is believed to be the first prospective observational report on the prevalence of hepatitis B/HIV co-infection in South Africa. Patients on whom hepatitis B serological tests could not have been done previously were recruited from an HIV clinic in a regional hospital in Johannesbur
