Students visit their school library an estimated 1.5 billion times during the school year, and research conducted in 12 states shows a direct link between good school libraries and higher student test scores (librarypublishing.scholastic.com). Libraries are among the most effective of all public services, serving more than two thirds of the public with less than 2% of all tax dollars. But library funding cuts have topped $111.2 million in the past 18 months, including the elimination of all public library service in Salinas, CA; the closure of two library branches in Erie County, PA; and the reduction in operating hours at all public libraries in Spokane, WA. Yet, Americans spend seven times as much money on home video games as they do on school library materials. SCHOOL REFORM INITIATIVES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COMPLEX, MESSY, AND AMORPHOUS, THEY ENCOMPASS TOPICS RANGING FROM SCHOOL-BASED MANAGEMENT TO USES OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM, FUELED BY FEDERAL AND STATE MANDATES TARGETING HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS TO SUCCEED, REFORM INITIATIVES HOLD SCHOOL SYSTEMS ACCOUNTABLE FOR AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION, IT IS NO WONDER THAT EDUCATORS CONSIDER THEMSELVES AT THE "EPICENTER OF A CONTINUING TEMPEST" (KINSLER & GAMBLE, 2001, P.3). The history of school librarianship reveals that teacher-librarians have participated in evolving concepts of reform in education (Urbanik, 1989). beginning with the progressive movement of the early and mid-1900s and continuing through the science and math emphasis of the post-Sputnik era, the pendulum swing back to basics in the 1980s, and the current focus on standards-based education. Research also finds that children who enter school with reading difficulties rarely catch up to their peers (Lyon, 2003; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). Additionally, Juel (1988) found that 88% of children exhibiting reading difficulties in grade 1 continued to have such problems into grade 4 and beyond. WE DO NOT USE THE WORD MUST LIGHTLY: THE STAKES OF PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY WORLD HAVE NEVER BEEN GREATER. One of the most common concerns teacher-librarians have shared with us across the country is the lack of understanding their administrators and their colleagues have about what is possible "if only" they were given the opportunity, the resources, and the support. Contrary to what some may believe, the lack of opportunity, resources, and support are not a personal attack nor is it a show of disrespect. The crux of the problem is that most administrators and staff fundamentally do not understand what is possible (despite many valiant efforts by teacher-librarians to explain it). Despite a projected decline Din enrollment, Florida spent $22,155,066,891 on instructional materials for its public schools, making it the fourth highest spender behind California, Texas, and New York (Market Data Retrieval [MDR], 2009). Currently, in many districts across the state, students and teachers access digital versions of their current textbooks (Surdin, 2009). With the passing of Florida legislation allowing school districts to use textbook funds to purchase digital content and other online educational resources (Manzo, 2009), the nation will increasingly look to Florida to take the lead in the process of digital textbook adoption (Mardis, et. al., 2010).

EVERYDAY IN MANY OF OUR SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, TEACHER-LIBRARIANS WORK WITH STUDENTS FROM A RANGE OF CULTURES/ETHNICITIES AND WITH VARIED ABILITIES, AS PART OF THEIR WORK, TEACHER-LIBRARIANS ARE CHARGED WITH MEETING THE LITERACY NEEDS OF EACH OF THESE STUDENTS ON THEIR LEARNING JOURNEY. Over the past ten years, as I have networked with teacher-librarians in schools and at conferences, attended lectures and presentations, as well as reviewed articles written on the topic, it is clear that as professionals, teacher-librarians have become more responsive to the needs of these students. Indeed, teacher-librarians have recognized the importance of providing access, representative collections, and programming targeted to students from the various cultural groups.

In October of 2010 Joyce Valenza posted a very powerful manifesto for 21st-century school librarians. (1) It lists a variety of cutting-edge practices and principles to enhance learning and service to young adults. It begins with a question asked by another school librarian: "In the 21st century, what does a school librarian do?" It is a question that is being asked across library types. Public librarians are trying to come to terms with their role in tough economic times. Academic librarians are wrestling with the migration to an overwhelmingly digital collection. Medical librarians are trying to understand what it is to be embedded within medical teams. Throughout the field, people are asking, "What does a librarian do?"

22 Perceptions of School Library Programs and School Librarians: Perspectives of Supportive School Administrators (Feature ARTICLE) - Teacher Librarian

School librarians, whether experienced or new to the job, realize how important the principal is to the success of their library program. Unfortunately, school principals often have a limited understanding or appreciation of the school librarian's role. Hartzell (2002) hypothesizes that this is the result of the "occupational invisibility" of school librarians and the fact that administrators' professional preparation and socialization do not expose them to the positive aspects of school library programs and their potential to impact student achievement. Little attention is given to the role of the school librarian or the school library program in administrator preparation programs and in the journals read by most school administrators (Hartzell, 2002; Kaplan, 2006; Wilson and McNeil, 1998).

As a profession, librarians have gone on the defensive, justifying in increasingly worried and frantic tones, just why they and their institutions are ever so much better than the Internet. Mark Herring's article "10 Reasons why the Internet is no substitute for a library" (Herring, 2001) and even a column of mine, "Why do we need libraries when we have the Internet?" (Johnson, 1998) are examples of this concern about our physical resources, space and even profession being replaced by Google and its virtual ilk.

Auteur : The Australian Library Journal

In Information Studies literature there is debate about the future of the 'subject librarian' as the increasing sophistication of electronic search devices leaves readers progressively more capable of seeking and interpreting information independently. As a case study, however, this essay will look at one such library professional, the curator for the Australian collection at the British Library, and question the impact of the absence of that role on public interaction with the Library's Australian material. It will be shown that the role of the subject librarian will necessarily be reinterpreted in future, but that subject specialists still play an important role as 'ambassadors' for the collections they represent. HELPING CHILDREN BECOME EFFECTIVE READERS AND WRITERS IS DEPENDENT ON MANY FACTORS, INCLUDING CHILDREN'S HAVING EASY ACCESS TO READING MATERIALS. A WELL-STOCKED SCHOOL LIBRARY IS A MAJOR INGREDIENT FOR PROVIDING SUCH ACCESS. TO ENSURE THAT THE SCHOOL LIBRARY COLLECTION REFLECTS CHILDREN'S INTERESTS AND PREFERENCES, THE CHILDREN SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN BUILDING THE COLLECTION. FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, CLASSROOM TEACHERS AND TEACHER-LIBRARIANS NEED TO COLLECT INFORMATION ABOUT READERS' INTERESTS AND PREFERENCES DURING THE NATURAL FLOW OF LITERACY LEARNING ACTIVITIES. THIS INFORMATION SHOULD THEN BE USED TO SECURE MATERIALS FOR THE LIBRARY COLLECTION. PERTINENT INFORMATION CAN BE COLLECTED IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE SCHOOL LIBRARY THROUGH OBSERVATIONS, CONFERENCES, PEER SHARING, CHECKLISTS, CREATIVE APPROACHES, REVIEWS OF PRINT AND NONPRINT MATERIALS, HOME-SCHOOL CONNECTIONS, AND PORTFOLIOS. POPULAR OPINION SUGGESTS THAT LIBRARIANS ARE A SEDENTARY BUNCH WITH LITTLE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS BEYOND LIFTING A FEW BOOKS AND OCCASIONALLY MOVING A CHAIR, THE STEREOTYPE GOES WAY BEYOND THAT IN THE MEDIA TO IMPLYING THAT LIBRARIANS ARE "BI-FOCAL WEARING BUNHEADS, COLLECTORS OF CARDIGAN SWEATERS, MIDDLE-AGED WOMEN IN POLYESTER SUITS, NATURALIZER SHOES, AND BAGGY STOCKINGS--WE'RE SMART, NERDY, NO NONSENSEY, AND OF COURSE BOOKISH" (BELBEN, 2004, p, 38), Well, that is not true for many librarians, except for the smart and, hopefully, the bookish parts. Ask Cathy Belben, who as a teacher-librarian (recently turned writer), rode her bike 20 miles to school, ran in local races, and played basketball against the students (2004). Cathy Belben has been a real, live "Nancy Pearl" action figure.

Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.--Robinson, 2006 Today, perhaps more than ever, the world is looking for people with innovative spirits, who seek and take on new challenges, develop rich thinking processes, and visualize unique possibilities. There is a need for individuals with flexible critical and creative thinking throughout all vocations and professions. There is a need for people who are geared toward collaboration, team risk taking, and finding ways to offer unique contributions. The question to ask of our schools and parents is: How are you preparing children to meet their futures--our futures--with innovative minds?

Passing through the high school office on a summer day in 2009, ran into our Biology teacher, who was in to check her mail. We chatted for a few minutes about our vacations and the weather, and then she said the magic words "I have an idea." She did have an ideas; a great idea for how we could work together and how she could use my expertise in inquiry, resources, and technology to add another dimension to her upcoming Anatomy and Physiology class. She had an idea for collaborating to make her class better than she could make it by herself.

SCHOOLCHILDREN WHO ARE GRIEVING MAY SUFFER FROM AN INABILITY TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON INSTRUCTION AND RETAIN LEARNING. HOWEVER, TRAUMATIC AND EMOTIONALLY PAINFUL EXPERIENCES BEAR SIMILARITIES TO AESTHETIC EXPERIENCES IN THAT THEY INITIATE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORKINGS OF THE WORLD. THE IMAGINATIVE MIND MAKES SENSE OF AESTHETIC EXPERIENCE THROUGH IMAGE, VISUAL AND LINGUISTIC RHYTHM, METAPHOR, AND SIMPLE NARRATIVE, WHICH ARE THE STUFF OF PICTURE BOOKS. PICTURE BOOKS, THEREFORE, MAY BE PARTICULARLY USEFUL TOOLS FOR REASSURING CHILDREN WHO ARE IN EMOTIONAL DISTRESS. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR PICTURE BOOKS THAT ADDRESS ISSUES OF SEPARATION AND DEATH, WAR AND HUMAN CONFLICT, AND NATURAL DISASTER. CHILDREN WHO ARE SUFFERING EMOTIONAL DISTRESS, AS WELL AS THEIR SYMPATHETIC CLASSMATES, MIGHT BENEFIT FROM DISCUSSIONS INSPIRED BY SENSITIVELY CONSTRUCTED PICTURE BOOKS. In their efforts to focus st

40 Information Power: Student Achievement is the Bottom Line. - Teacher Librarian
Auteur : Teacher Librarian
Genre : Éducation
The learner is central in the 1998 edition of Information power: Building partnerships for learning, the new guidelines for school library media programs. In standards of the '70s, we emphasized program inputs like facilities, budget and collection; in the '80s, we focused attention on our own roles as teacher, information specialist and consultant. Now in 1998, students are central to the guidelines with the introduction of student standards for information literacy. Three strategies are developed in the guidelines to assist in effectively implementing those student standards: collaborating, leading and using technology; these strategies apply in all three functions of the libary media program -- learning and teaching, information access and delivery, and program administration. In the last chapter the guidelines portray the student as a part of a global learning community and acknowled

Many school libraries are experiencing budget reductions and staff reductions. Technology can help in these stressful times by getting your message out to many and at the same time! It is still possible to communicate effectively and in a timely manner even if your paper budget and time allocated for communicating have been slashed. And it is possible to communicate with your constituents with even more clout by using some new technologies.

45 Turn up the Music with Digital Technologies (Infotech) - Teacher Librarian

A group of young people are picking out music for a poetry slam. A pair of students are wearing ear buds and playing a keyboard attached to a computer. A child reads a story into the laptop's microphone as music plays softly in the background. Turn your school library into a learning laboratory where students can explore all aspects of music as they address standards across the curriculum. Although music plays an important role in the lives of young people, it is often ignored and even censored by educators. Many schools have filtered all MP3 downloads from the Internet and have prohibited music players from school grounds. From the built-in microphone on a laptop to iPods and smart cell phones, the potential for music in learning is enormous. How do we balance concerns about lyrics and "audio cheating" with the benefits associated with the musical medium?

I recently visited a colleague's school library and observed several groups of grade 5 students busily scanning and taking notes from different volumes of print encyclopedias. The teacher-librarian and I struck up a conversation about the students' projects, and I inquired if they would be gathering information from online sources such as Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia. Without hesitation, she answered no, explaining that she thought that Wikipedia was too difficult for many of her readers, that some of the information in it was questionable, and that the students did not have access to enough computers that were connected to the Internet. This and the next Literacy Links column reviews my concerns and explores the question, Can wikis be valuable resources for developing strong literacy links between the school library and the classroom? For those who are new to the term, a wiki is a c

Not long ago Teacher Librarian had an article from a noted cybersecurity expert regarding the hazards of using the Internet and its tentacles ("Seeking a Balance" Online Safety for Our Children" by Barbara Endicott-Popovsky, December, 2009). This article went into techniques about having a "symbiotic relationship" between the Internet and the classroom. There were sobering statistics in this article; ones that cause you to pause and think about the issue of having students do online research at school. The bibliography was extremely helpful to teachers and school librarians. More recently (August 2010) it was announced that one of the browsers commonly used by students sets up a personal profile information for each person using it for "shopping" concerns--whether one is shopping or not at that time. So much is being written about how to effectively use technology, including Internet

I downloaded the new Green Doy tunes on my iPod last night. Do you went to watch lost night's episode of Lost on my cell phone during lunch? I saw you online lost night. Did you try that new game they were demo-ing? As students walk through your library, you may catch pieces of their conversations and wonder if they live on another planet. It is trot a parallel universe, just the digital world of today's children and young adults. They come to school hoping for a learning environment as multisensory and stimulating as the outside world but are often disappointed by old-fashioned textbooks and low-tech approaches. So how do we balance the need for quality content with the importance of providing varied, engaging resources to meet diverse learning needs?

TEACHER TEAMS THAT GET RESULTS: 61 STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINING AND RENEWING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES Gayle H. Gregory and Lin Kuzmich I have reviewed in this column a number of books dealing with professional learning communities because they seem to provide the best hope for a faculty to work as a team to achieve a united goal. Now comes a remarkable volume by two authors who understand what a collaborative school is and how to make it work. The title is correct: There are 61 strategies described in this book to get collaboration started, maintain the conversation, and fix the problems if there is a breakdown. I have not seen so many strategies for adult learners assembled in one place before, and the good thing is that they take into account the learning styles of adults. The strategies are grouped in a number of themes: creating a growth-oriented culture, sharing knowledge a
