Auteur : Jean-Claude Vitran, Anastassia Tsoukala, Jérôme Thorel, Thierry Rousselin, Sylvia Preuss-Laussinotte, Pierre Piazza, Sébastien Laurent, Vincent Dufief, Vincent Denis, Ayse Ceyhan, Laurent Bonelli, Michel Alberganti & Christian Aghroum
Genre : Politique et actualité
« Big Brother is watching you !

15 The Beak of the Finch - Jonathan Weiner
Auteur : Jonathan Weiner
Genre : Science de la vie
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize
Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize

On a desert island in the heart of the Galapagos archipelago, where Darwin received his first inklings of the theory of evolution, two scientists, Peter and Rosemary Grant, have spent twenty years proving that Darwin did not know the strength of his own theory. For among the finches of Daphne Major, natural selection is neither rare nor slow: it is taking place by the hour, and we can watch.

In this dramatic story of groundbreaking scientific research, Jonathan Weiner follows these scientists as they watch Darwin's finches and come up with a new understanding of life itself. The Beak of the Finch is an elegantly written and compelling masterpiece of theory and explication in the tradition of Stephen Jay Gould.

With a new preface.

16 The Goshawk - T.H. White & Marie Winn
Auteur : T.H. White & Marie Winn
Genre : Nature
The predecessor to Helen Macdonald’s H is for Hawk, T. H. White’s nature writing classic, The Goshawk, asks the age-old question: what is it that binds human beings to other animals? White, the author of The Once and Future King and Mistress Masham’s Repose, was a young writer who found himself rifling through old handbooks of falconry. A particular sentence—”the bird reverted to a feral state”—seized his imagination, and, White later wrote, “A longing came to my mind that I should be able to do this myself. The word ‘feral’ has a kind of magical potency which allied itself to two other words, ‘ferocious’ and ‘free.’” Immediately, White wrote to Germany to acquire a young goshawk. Gos, as White named the bird, was ferocious and Gos was free, and White had no idea how to break him in beyond the ancient (and, though he did not know it,

17 Radio Frequency Identification Technologies: - Committee on Radio Frequency Identification Technologies
Auteur : Committee on Radio Frequency Identification Technologies
Genre : Ingénierie
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is gaining rapid acceptance as a means to track a wide array of manufactured objects. Currently, RFID technologies have shown promise in transportation (e.g., smart fare cards) and commerce (e.g., inventory control) for a variety of uses and are likely to find many new applications in both military and civilian areas if and when current technical issues are resolved. There are a number of policy concerns (e.g., privacy), however, that will become more crucial as the technology spreads. This report presents a summary of a workshop, held by the NRC at the request of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, to explore many of the key technical and policy issues. Several important themes that are likely to govern expansion of RFID technology emerged from the workshop and are discussed.

In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the use of wireless communications devices and a great deal of research has been carried out to investigate possible biological or human health effects resulting from their use. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked the National Research Council to organize a workshop to identify research needs and gaps in knowledge in the areas of dosimetry and exposure, epidemiology, human laboratory studies, mechanisms, and animal and cell biology. The workshop did not include the evaluation of health effects or the generation of recommendations relating to how identified research needs should be met. Some needs and gaps identified at the workshop include: (1) characterization of exposures from wireless devices and RF base station antennas in juveniles, children, fetuses, and pregnant women and (2) evaluation of devices that use newer technologi

20 Identifying the Culprit - Committee on Scientific Approaches to Understanding and Maximizing the Validity and Reliability of Eyewitness Identification in Law Enforcement and the Courts
Auteur : Committee on Scientific Approaches to Understanding and Maximizing the Validity and Reliability of Eyewitness Identification in Law Enforcement and the Courts
Genre : Droit
Eyewitnesses play an important role in criminal cases when they can identify culprits. Estimates suggest that tens of thousands of eyewitnesses make identifications in criminal investigations each year. Research on factors that affect the accuracy of eyewitness identification procedures has given us an increasingly clear picture of how identifications are made, and more importantly, an improved understanding of the principled limits on vision and memory that can lead to failure of identification. Factors such as viewing conditions, duress, elevated emotions, and biases influence the visual perception experience. Perceptual experiences are stored by a system of memory that is highly malleable and continuously evolving, neither retaining nor divulging content in an informational vacuum. As such, the fidelity of our memories to actual events may be compromised by many factors at all stages

21 The Relationship Between Sport Team Identification and Social Well-Being: Additional Evidence Supporting the Team Identification--Social Psychological Health Model. - North American Journal of Psychology
Auteur : North American Journal of Psychology
Genre : Éducation
The current study tested three predictions generated from Wann's (2004) Team Identification--(Social) Psychological Health Model. Specifically, it was hypothesized that social well-being would be a) positively related to identification with a local sport team, b) not related to identification with a distant team, and c) not related to mere sport fandom. The current investigation expanded on previous research by assessing social well-being through participants' satisfaction with their social life (and their collective self-esteem) and by using regression analyses simultaneously examining the impact of the three predictor variables on social psychological health. Results from 155 university students confirmed expectations and substantiated Wann's model. Discussion includes suggestions for future research. Sport team identification concerns the extent to which a fan feels a psychological co

Genre : Sciences sociales

28 The Positive Relationship Between Sport Team Identification and Belief in the Trustworthiness of Others. - North American Journal of Psychology
Auteur : North American Journal of Psychology
Genre : Éducation
The current investigation examined the relationship between team identification and beliefs in the trustworthiness of others. Based on the Team Identification--Social Psychological Health Model (Wann, 2006), it was hypothesized that a positive relationship would emerge between these two variables. The hypothesis was tested by asking 127 university students to complete a questionnaire packet assessing level of identification with a local collegiate basketball team and a measure assessing the trustworthiness of others. Consistent with predictions, a significant correlation between identification and beliefs in trust was found. Social scientific research (e.g., Hogg & Abrams, 1990; Linville, 1987) has documented the psychological benefits of membership in a variety of groups including religious organizations (Diener & Clifton, 2002), school peer groups (Brown & Lohr, 1987), a

How do Kleinians work with projective identification?

The concept of projective identification, first introduced by Melanie Klein in 1946, has been widely studied by psychoanalysts of different persuasions. However, these explorations have neglected to show what Kleinians actually do with the projective identification phenomenon in their daily casework.

Projective Identification in the Clinical Setting presents a detailed study of Kleinian literature, setting a background of understanding for the day-to-day analytic atmosphere in which projective identification takes place. Extensive clinical material illustrates issues clearly identified for clinical practice, including:

* the ways projective identification occurs within various psychological constellations;
* the role of the analyst in countertransference experiences;

Vaccines have proven to be one of the most successful and efficient means of controlling infectious diseases of public health importance, including smallpox, polio, pertussis, and measles (1). The annual global burden of 300-500 million new malaria cases and 1-3 million malaria-related deaths demonstrates the potential public health and socioeconomic benefit that would accrue with the deployment of a highly effective malaria vaccine, particularly for the most affected and impoverished populations (2). However, despite several decades of research and substantial evidence for its feasibility, such a vaccine remains elusive (3). Among the many challenges facing vaccine developers is how to mine the human immune response to natural infection to identify protective antigens and associated host responses. While there is no evidence that sterile immunity is ever naturally induced by the parasit

The extant research assumes learning is occurring but does not directly address the importance of learning to the process. To fully understand the nature of the entrepreneurial process, researchers must take into account how individuals learn and how different modes of learning influence opportunity identification and exploitation. Vehicles are complex mechanical systems with strong nonlinear characteristics and which can present some uncertainties due to their dynamic parameters such as masses, inertias, suspension springs, tires side slip coefficients, etc. A vehicle is composed of many parts, namely the unsprung mass, the sprung mass, the suspension which makes the link between these two masses and therefore ensures passenger comfort, and also the pneumatic which absorbs the energy coming from the road and ensures contact between the vehicle and the road. In addition to its complexity and the presence of many nonlinearities and uncertainties, the presence of some external perturbations, such as the wind and the road inputs with its own characteristics (radius of curvature, longitudinal and lateral slop, road profile and skid resistance) can cause risks not only to the vehicle but also to passengers and other roa

37 Identification of Enteric Pathogens in Hiv-Positive Patients with Diarrhoea in Northern India. - Journal of Health Population and Nutrition
Auteur : Journal of Health Population and Nutrition
Genre : Forme et santé
INTRODUCTION Infections of the gastrointestinal tract are common in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It has been estimated that 30-50% of patients with AIDS in the USA and about 90% in Africa and Haiti suffer from chronic diarrhoea (1,2). The impact of some relatively new spore/oocyst-forming intestinal protozoa, such as Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, Microsporidia, and Isospora, on patients with AIDS is severe (3). Infections caused by these parasites cannot be differentiated clinically unless specific faecal examination is carried out. The isolation rates of intestinal parasites in patients with AIDS and chronic diarrhoea vary from 40% to 83% (4,5), and the parasitic agents also differ markedly from region to region (6).

38 Identification, Characterization, and Ontogenic Study of Three Novel Zebrafish Cytosolic Sulfotransferases (SULTs) - Yasir Ihsan Mohammed
Auteur : Yasir Ihsan Mohammed
Genre : Médecine
In mammals, sulfation as catalyzed by the cytosolic sulfotransfereases (SULTs) is known to be involved in the metabolism and homeostasis of key endogenous compounds such as thyroid/steroid hormones, as well as in the detoxification of xenobioticsincluding drugs. The present study constitutes part of an overall effort in establishing the zebrafish as a model for studying drug sulfation. By searching GenBank database, we have identified sequences encoding three new zebrafish SULTs. These three novel zebrafish SULTs, designated SULT3 ST4, SULT3 ST5 and SULT1 ST9, were cloned, expressed, purified, and characterized. SULT3 ST4 showed strong activity toward endogenous compound such as dehydroepiandrosterine (DHEA), pregnenolone, and 17β-estradiol. SULT3 ST5 showed weaker, but significant, activities toward endogenous compounds such as DHEA and corticosterone, and xenobiotics including mestra

The American people are increasingly dependent upon the Internet for daily conveniences, critical services, and economic prosperity. substantial growth in internet access and networked devices has facilitated widespread opportunities and innovation. This extraordinary level of connectivity, however, has also introduced progressively greater cyber risks for the united states. Long-standing threats are evolving as nation-states, terrorists, individual criminals, transnational criminal organizations, and other malicious actors move their activities into the digital world. Enabling the delivery of essential services—such as electricity, finance, transportation, water, and health care—through cyberspace also introduces new vulnerabilities and opens the door to potential

43 The Force Field of the Real: Imaginary and Symbolic Identification in Roberto Bolano's Estrella Distante - Adolfo Cacheiro
Auteur : Adolfo Cacheiro
Genre : Sciences sociales
In the preface to Estrella distante (1996) Roberto Bolafio indicates that the original version of this text, the final chapter orla literatura nazi en America, entitled "Ramirez Hoffman, el infame," "se narraba tal vez demasiado esquematicamente" (11). By means of "Arturo B" (Arturo Belano: an alter ego of Bolano) he expresses the desire for "una historia mas larga, no espejo ni explosion de otras historias sino espejo y explosion en si misma" (11). The "espejo y explosion en si misma" foreshadow something that is found in chapters 4 and 5 of ED that does not exist in the corresponding part of RHI: a narrator with multiple imaginary identities. La literatura nazi en America is a fictional encyclopedia ofwriters with fascistic tendencies throughout the Americas. The thematic unity and stylistic virtuosity of this parodical anthology is reminiscent ofJorge Luis Borges's Historia universal

Genre : Ingénierie
The chapters in this volume were presented at the July–August 2006 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Imaging for Detection and Identi?cation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glo- ous Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the eighth time we gathered at this idyllicspottoexploreandextendthereciprocitybetweenmathematicsand- gineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied sci- tists which occurred at our seven previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The fusion of basic ideas in mathematics, radar, sonar, biology, and ch- istry with ongoing improvements in hardware and computation offers the promise of much more sophisticated and accurate detection and identi?cation capabilities than currently exist. Coupled with the dramatic rise in the need for sur

45 Comparison of Intraparenchymal and Intradermal Injection for Identification of the Sentinel Node in Patients with Breast Cancer (Clinical Report) - Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings
Auteur : Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings
Genre : Forme et santé
Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping with radioisotope and blue dye has been advocated for the staging of clinically negative axillae in patients with breast cancer. The optimal radiotracer injection technique is still being defined. This study compares the results of intraparenchymal and intradermal injection of technetium 99m (Tc 99m) sulfur colloid to establish an optimal method for SLN localization. Methods: Consecutive patients (n = 435) with clinically T0-2N0 breast cancer had SLN biopsy performed by a single surgeon. All patients but one received injections of both blue dye and Tc 99m sulfur colloid; one patient had injection of blue dye only and was excluded from analysis. Blue dye injections were intraparenchymal in all patients. The results of intraparenchymal (n = 107) and intradermal (n = 327) injections of radioisotope were compared for the following endpoints: 1

47 Tree Identification Book - George W. Symonds
Auteur : George W. Symonds
Genre : Jardinage
A new method for the practical identification and recognition of trees -- and an important supplement to existing botanical methods.

The book is in two parts: Pictorial Keys and Master Pages. The Keys are designed for easy visual comparison of details which look alike, narrowing the identification of a tree to one of a small group -- the family or genus.

Then, in the Master Pages, the species of the tree is determined, with similar details placed together to highlight differences within the family group, thus eliminating all other possibilities. The details of the Oak trees on this plate are an example of the system.

All of the more than 1500 photographs were made specifically for use in this book and were taken either in the field or of carefully collected specimens. Where possible, details such as leaves, fruit, etc., appear in actual size, or in the sa

48 Identification of Membrane Proteins in Maize Leaves, Altered in Expression Under Drought Stress Through Polyethylene Glycol Treatment (Report) - Plant OMICS
Auteur : Plant OMICS
Genre : Secteurs et professions
Introduction Drought is a major environmental stress factor that affects the growth and development of plants and causes yields loss in cultivated crops worldwide (Waraich et al., 2011). The physiological and molecular basis for plant responses to drought has been the subject of intensive researches (Bartels and Sunkar 2005). To counter the effects of drought, plants undergo a process of stress acclimation. This process may require changes in gene (e.g. Gorantla et al. 2007, Guo et al. 2009, Harb et al. 2010) and protein expression profiles (e.g. Plomion et al. 2006, Bhushan et al. 2007, Aranjuelo et al. 2010). Membrane proteins in plants play a key role in various important cellular mechanisms, such as metabolite, ion transport and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, etc, according to their location at the interface between cells or between cell compartments (Marmagne et al. 20

49 Using Word Identification Fluency to Monitor First-Grade Reading Development (Report) - Exceptional Children
Auteur : Exceptional Children
Genre : Éducation
Reading skill is an integral component of academic success. When students fail to develop adequate literacy skills at a young age, they are more likely to struggle throughout their academic careers (Juel, 1988), and it is time-intensive and expensive to remediate their difficulties. Students who are poor readers in the early grades rarely catch up to their peers, even with extra help (Juel, 1988), putting them at risk for learning disabilities (LD) and a variety of negative educational outcomes. Early intervention to prevent development of reading difficulties can be an effective way to ameliorate this problem (Torgesen, Wagner, Rashotte, Rose, et al., 1999), and screening and progress monitoring can identify students who require such intervention (Compton, Fuchs, Fuchs, & Bryant, 2006). Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is an assessment tool that provides teachers with reliable

Genre : Science de la vie
Diaprepes abbreviatus L. is a polyphagous weevil affecting more than 270 species of plants. The larvae feed on roots of the trees causing damage that can kill the plant. Originally from the Caribbean, this weevil was first found in the United States in Apopka, Florida in 1964 (Woodruff 1964) and it currently infests 23 counties in Florida. In 2000, D. abbreviatus was discovered in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas (Skaria & French 2001) and in 2005 in southern California (California Department of Food and Agriculture, CDFA, 2007). Different control measurements, which are specific to a particular life stage of the weevil, are currently in use (McCoy et al. 2007). However, when egg masses or larvae are found, the diagnosis of infestation is often delayed due to lack of reliable methods that allow one to identify nonadult stages. The objective of this study was to develop a method for speci
