1 The emerging equity gap: Growth and stability in the new investor landscape - McKinsey Global Institute, Charles Roxburgh, Susan Lund, Richard Dobbs, James Manyika & Haihao Wu
Auteur : McKinsey Global Institute, Charles Roxburgh, Susan Lund, Richard Dobbs, James Manyika & Haihao Wu
Genre : Économie
Several forces are converging to reshape global capital markets in the coming decade and to reduce the role of listed equities. The most important of these is the rapid shift of wealth to emerging markets where private investors typically put less than 15 percent of their money into equities (compared to 30–40 percent in many mature economies). At the same time, demand for listed equities in developed economies is likely to fall due to aging, shifting pension regimes, growth of alternative investments, and new financial regulations. The result, according to a new McKinsey Global Institute report, The emerging equity gap: Growth and stability in the new investor landscape, will be a potential $12.3 trillion “equity gap” between the amount of equities that investors will demand and what companies will need to fund growth over the next decade. MGI projects that the share of glob

3 Leading from the Emerging Future - Otto Scharmer & Katrin Kaufer
Auteur : Otto Scharmer & Katrin Kaufer
Genre : Management et direction
Our Time Is Now We have entered an age of disruption. Financial collapse, climate change, resource depletion, and a growing gap between rich and poor are but a few of the signs. Otto Scharmer and Katrin Kaufer ask, why do we collectively create results nobody wants? Meeting the challenges of this century requires updating our economic logic and operating system from an obsolete “ego-system” focused entirely on the well-being of oneself to an eco-system awareness that emphasizes the well-being of the whole. Filled with real-world examples, this thought-provoking guide presents proven practices for building a new economy that is more resilient, intentional, inclusive, and aware. “A watershed! An inspiring, practical weaving of the inner and outer dimensions of the systemic changes so many around the world are now working toward.” —Peter Senge, Senior Lecturer, MIT Sloan S

7 Emerging States and Economies - Takashi Shiraishi & Tetsushi Sonobe
Auteur : Takashi Shiraishi & Tetsushi Sonobe
Genre : Administration publique
This open access book asks why and how some of the developing countries have “emerged” under a set of similar global conditions, what led individual countries to choose the particular paths that led to their “emergence,” and what challenges confront them. If we are to understand the nature of major risks and uncertainties in the world, we must look squarely at the political and economic dynamics of emerging states, such as China, India, Brazil, Russia, and ASEAN countries. Their rapid economic development has changed the distribution of wealth and power in the world. Yet many of them have middle income status. To global governance issues, they tend to adopt approaches that differ from those of advanced industrialized democracies. At home, rapid economic growth and social changes put pressure on their institutions to change. This volume traces th

9 The Big Nine - Amy Webb
Auteur : Amy Webb
Genre : Secteurs et professions
A call-to-arms about the broken nature of artificial intelligence, and the powerful corporations that are turning the human-machine relationship on its head.

We like to think that we are in control of the future of "artificial" intelligence. The reality, though, is that we--the everyday people whose data powers AI--aren't actually in control of anything. When, for example, we speak with Alexa, we contribute that data to a system we can't see and have no input into--one largely free from regulation or oversight. The big nine corporations--Amazon, Google, Facebook, Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Microsoft, IBM and Apple--are the new gods of AI and are short-changing our futures to reap immediate financial gain.

In this book, Amy Webb reveals the pervasive, invisible ways in which the foundations of AI--the people working on the system, their motivations, the

11 The Future Is Asian - Parag Khanna

Genre : Économie
In the 19th century, the world was Europeanized. In the 20th century, it was Americanized. Now, in the 21st century, the world is being Asianized.

The “Asian Century” is even bigger than you think. Far greater than just China, the new Asian system taking shape is a multi-civilizational order spanning Saudi Arabia to Japan, Russia to Australia, Turkey to Indonesia—linking five billion people through trade, finance, infrastructure, and diplomatic networks that together represent 40 percent of global GDP. China has taken a lead in building the new Silk Roads across Asia, but it will not lead it alone. Rather, Asia is rapidly returning to the centuries-old patterns of commerce, conflict, and cultural exchange that thrived long before European colonialism and American dominance. Asians will determine their own future—and as they collectively assert their interests ar

13 Why Gender Matters, Second Edition - Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D.
Auteur : Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D.
Genre : Famille - parents
A revised and updated edition (with more than 70% new material) of the evergreen classic about the innate differences between boys and girls and how best to parent and teach girls and boys successfully, with completely new chapters on sexual orientation and on transgender and intersex kids.

Eleven years ago, Why Gender Matters broke ground in illuminating the differences between boys and girls--how they perceive the world differently, how they learn differently, how they process emotions and take risks differently. Dr. Sax argued that in failing to recognize these hardwired differences between boys and girls, we ended up reinforcing damaging stereotypes, medicalizing normal behavior (see: the rising rates of ADHD diagnosis), and failing to support kids to reach their full potential. In the intervening decade, the world has changed drastically, with an avalanche of

In Calvin's Company of Pastors, Scott Manetsch examines the pastoral theology and practical ministry activities of Geneva's reformed ministers from the time of Calvin's arrival in Geneva until the beginning of the seventeenth century. During these seven decades, more than 130 men were enrolled in Geneva's Venerable Company of Pastors (as it was called), including notable reformed leaders such as Pierre Viret, Theodore Beza, Simon Goulart, Lambert Daneau, and Jean Diodati. Aside from these better-known epigones, Geneva's pastors from this period remain hidden from view, cloaked in Calvin's long shadow, even though they played a strategic role in preserving and reshaping Calvin's pastoral legacy. Making extensive use of archival materials, published sermons, catechisms, prayer books, personal correspondence, and theological writings, Manetsch offers an engaging and vivid portrait of pasto

Research experience is now known to be an extremely effective means for engaging students, especially in science and engineering, yet it is not used extensively to engage the most rapidly growing segment of the student population. The reasons for this phenomenon were examined in a September 13, 2007 National Academies workshop entitled, "Partnerships for Emerging Research Institutions" (ERIs).  The workshop began by examining the impact of research experiences on students in ERIs. It then dissected the reasons why it is so difficult to cultivate a research climate in these institutions. The net result is that few ERI faculty pursue research, leaving most of our nation's students without access to the one experience that is the foundation of science and engineering disciplines.

This book presents some creative solutions to both the teaching load and "administructural" pro

Our daily weather, what we eat, and coastal flooding are all interconnected with the future of the Arctic. The year 2012 was an astounding year for Arctic change. 38 Air Purification to Reduce OA (Emerging Technologies) (Outdoor Air) - ASHRAE Journal

Genre : Ingénierie
Buildings require ventilation with outdoor air to maintain a level of indoor air quality that provides a healthy environment for the occupants of the building interior space. In simple terms, carbon dioxide and bioeffluents are generated by building occupants while various gases and particulate matter (PM), some potentially harmful, are emitted by building materials and furnishings, equipment, and cleaning supplies, etc. By exhausting indoor air at an appropriate flow rate and replacing it with clean outdoor air, the concentrations of these occupant- and building material-generated gases can be maintained below objectionable or harmful levels. ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2007 prescribes outdoor ventilation makeup airflow rates and methods to maintain acceptable indoor air quality in commercial and institutional buildings. 39 Heat Pumps for Cold Climates (Emerging Technologies) (Report) - ASHRAE Journal
Auteur : ASHRAE Journal
Genre : Ingénierie
The majority of air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) are installed in moderate to warm areas of the United States, mostly south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Two major issues make conventional ASHPs unattractive as a heat source in cold climates. First, buildings in colder climates often have appreciably smaller design cooling loads than design heating loads. Second, ASHP heating capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) decrease as the outdoor temperature, [T.sub.o], decreases because the temperature lift across the compressor increases. For these reasons, conventional ASHPs sized to meet cooling loads cannot meet the full heating loads at lower [T.sub.o], necessitating extensive use of costly, and energy-inefficient, electric resistance heating.

HOWEVER, I periodically guest lecture in health policy and undergraduate professional nursing courses and have noticed that over the last few years, classes are becoming larger and larger. Some classes top 150 students or more! * It is also getting more complicated in the classroom environment to keep students' attention. Students are preoccupied by a lot of "tech toys" that can facilitate learning but often serve as a distraction from learning. Students use their laptops to connect to the Internet, to shop, send email, and surf the web. They use their PDAs to send instant messages to their friends. Those students who are cleverly hidden in the last rows of an auditorium conceal their white earplugs and listen to their iTunes or watch the latest episode

Can we control Ebola via ring vaccination strategies?
How quickly should we detect Ebola cases to ensure epidemic control?
What is the likelihood that an Ebola epidemic in West Africa leads to secondary outbreaks in other parts of the world?  When does it matter to incorporate the role of disease-induced mortality on epidemic models? What is the role of behavior changes on Ebola dynamics? How can we better understand the control of cholera or Ebola using optimal control theory? How should a population be structured in order to mimic the transmission dynamics of diseases such as chlamyd

42 The Job Revolution: Employment for Today and Tomorrow (Emerging Careers) - Techniques
Auteur : Techniques
Genre : Éducation
In July 2010, more than 14 million Americans were unemployed. Yet about 3 million mainly STEM-related jobs were vacant across the U.S. economy. More firms are beginning to report that even though there are huge numbers of available workers, those workers do not have the skills the firms want. Businesses are struggling to find the talent needed to compete in this new world. This relatively high level of job vacancies seems to contradict the high level of U.S. joblessness. "If this is the new-normal, it's more about the labor market than the GDP," states Glenn Hubbard, dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Business. "We have to help people face a new world." Patrick Larkin, director of the John Adams Innovation Institute in Massachusetts, terms today's biggest challenge in building a workforce as getting students from K-12 through postsecondary to understand and to prepare for available

43 Energy Harvesting for Wireless Sensors (Emerging Technologies) - ASHRAE Journal
Auteur : ASHRAE Journal
Genre : Ingénierie
A variety of wireless-enabled sensor products, most notably wireless temperature sensors, have come to market recently, both within and outside of the HVAC industry. They offer the potential to reduce the installed cost of communicating sensed data by replacing wired infrastructure with digital radio-based communications (e.g., using the ZigBee protocol). Wireless systems tend to be a more attractive solution in retrofit situations, where running additional wires often costs much more than in new installations and also disrupts building occupants. (1) Examples of building applications where wireless systems can have significant value include: * Additional temperature sensors to enable building diagnostics (e.g., ongoing commissioning); (2)

44 Are You Computing in the Clouds? Understanding Cloud Computing (Emerging Technology Center) - Nursing Education Perspectives
Auteur : Nursing Education Perspectives
Genre : Éducation
UOR WEEKS NOW, THERE HAS BEEN TALK IN THE MEDIA ABOUT |CLOUDTM AND OTHER CLOUD SERVICES OFFERED BY AMAZON AND GOOGLE. I recently did a preconference on cloud computing with Dennis Crain, senior research program manager for the Extreme Computing Group at Microsoft Research (yes, I am a Mac person, but I can work with PC people), so I am up to speed on the concept and can share some of the basics on its use in higher education, research, and health care. What Is Cloud Computing? There are numerous definitions, but, as usual, I like to start with Educause's 7 Things You Should Know: "Cloud computing is the delivery of scalable IT resources over the Internet, as opposed to hosting and operating those resources locally, such as on a college or university network" (2009). Hurwitz, Bloor, Kaufman, and Halper, in Dummies. Tom (201 I), provide an easy-to-understand definition: "Cloud computing

45 An Updated Look at DCV Approaches (Emerging Technologies) (Demand Controlled Ventilation) - ASHRAE Journal
Auteur : ASHRAE Journal
Genre : Ingénierie
Demand controlled ventilation (DCV) can meet ventilation requirements without wasting energy in under-occupied buildings. About six years ago, DCV was first discussed in this column. (1) Updates to ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2007 (2) and continued development and research in the field make this a good time to revisit the topic.

46 Nursing 2.0: should We As Educators be Crafting the Next Generation of Nursing Practice? (Emerging Technologies Center) (Essay) - Nursing Education Perspectives
Auteur : Nursing Education Perspectives
Genre : Éducation
THE NEW YEAR IS A TIME FOR TRADITIONS. Thus, President-elect Barack Obama is TIME Magazine's Person of the Year and bailout is Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year. It is also time for reflection. I have been reflecting lately on technology and the new words being introduced into our vocabulary. * Along with verbs like google ant wii, we have a growing phenomenon of attaching 2.0 to a variety of nouns. For example, the Chronicle of Higher Education now has Campus 2.0 and College 2.0 as sections and uses such titles as Public Intellectual 2.0. You can google lots of nouns, like Research 2.0, Faculty 2.0, Education 2.0, and locate many resources. In the health care arena, I found Health 2.0, Medicine 2.0, Patient 2.0, and Patient Empowerment 2.0. But the only Nursing 2.0 resources I found were my own columns for Nursing Education Perspectives. So, to kick off the new year I propose that we e

47 Residential Energy Monitoring (Emerging Technologies) (Report) - ASHRAE Journal
Auteur : ASHRAE Journal
Genre : Ingénierie
In two decades U.S. energy consumption will increase by roughly 40%, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Energy Information Administration. Currently, residential buildings account for about 21% of U.S. energy consumption and 37% of U.S. electricity consumption. (1) TVs and multimedia set-top boxes alone consume 6% of residential electric use. (2) Overall, homeowners do not have a way to identify offending systems and usage patterns that contribute to waste. Addressing these problems, or more appropriately, empowering individuals and institutions to solve them, is attracting increased technological development interest. Attempts to address the issue by informing homeowners of simple remedies that have significant paybacks, such as more insulation, weather-stripping, and installing more efficient appliances have had some results, though many homeowners do not

48 Nursing Education 2.0: Social Networking for Professionals (Emerging Technologies Center) - Nursing Education Perspectives
Auteur : Nursing Education Perspectives
Genre : Éducation
FOR THOSE EDUCATORS too fearful to join Facebook or MySpace, this column will introduce you to social networking opportunities for grown-ups, specifically professionals. I am not trying dissuade you from joining FaceBook or MySpace, especially if you want to check out your teenagers or your students on these sites, but I am offering some alternatives. Let's start first with some background and definitions. As you know from previous columns, the emergence of Web 2.0 is dramatically changing how we use the Web. The focus of Web 2.0 is about connecting people to boost their knowledge and allow them to learn from each other. "Web 2.0 tools are focused on communication, collaboration, interactivity, connecting with people and creating value through the sharing of ideas and making use of the collective wisdom of the web community" (1). Because this is a major focus, many equate Web 2.0 tools w

49 Nursing Practice 2.0: the Wisdom of Crowds (EMERGING Technologies Center) (Column) - Nursing Education Perspectives
Auteur : Nursing Education Perspectives
Genre : Éducation
IN A RECENT BOOK, James Surowiecki (2005) put forth his ideas about collective intelligence in today's culture. He hypothesized that groups of people are smarter than a few smart individuals and makes the case that the collective "wisdom of crowds" is better at solving problems, making good decisions, and fostering innovation. In this column, we will begin to explore how consumers use the principle of the wisdom of crowds to find health information and make health care decisions. The introduction of the World Wide Web has democratized access to information and knowledge. This is particularly true in health care. Knowledge around diseases, treatments, and even evidence is no longer under the control of the health care establishment, but is accessible by consumers.

50 The Rapidly Changing Interconnect: New Technology Drives New Apps. Embedding Components Gives American Manufacturing Another Chance to Shine (Emerging Technologies) - Printed Circuit Design & Fab
Auteur : Printed Circuit Design & Fab
Genre : Entreprise et management
The electronics landscape is changing in ways unforeseen even a few years ago, and the interconnect, or printed circuit board (to use the old definition), is at the forefront of those changes. The underlying technology is changing in ways that few in the West now understand. With huge cost pressures and the shift of basic electronics manufacturing to Asia, these new manufacturing processes have fundamentally altered the topography in ways that present significant opportunities to designers and systems engineers, managers and marketers. These changes are also significant challenges to the relevance of the manufacturing and technology base in North America and Europe. Consider the iPhone. Every day, new applications that go far beyond the original concept are being introduced. These include:
